Smithfield OCGT Controls

Provecta successfully designed and delivered the new PLC controls system, Operational Technology (OT) platform, and SCADA system for the Smithfield Energy Facility, a 123MW power plant featuring three Open Cycle Gas Turbines (OCGT). This facility serves as a crucial strategic grid firming asset in NSW.

Previously managed by a Max1000 DCS, the facility underwent a comprehensive controls upgrade led by Provecta. Our team conducted an initial control systems options analysis and concept development, followed by detailed design development, configuration, factory testing, site cutover, and commissioning. In the absence of substantial original documentation, Provecta reverse-engineered the existing DCS code to develop a detailed Functional Design Specification. We also designed and implemented a virtualised OT environment to ensure reliable and cybersecure service provision. Additionally, Provecta established and documented new programmatic and SCADA standards, including logical and graphical templates for operator and asset interfacing. Throughout the project, we collaborated closely with Infigen/Iberdrola, conducting workshops, design reviews, and client witness testing.

The cutover was meticulously planned and executed during a brief station outage, allowing the plant to be brought online faster than anticipated. This timely execution enabled the facility to capitalise on a short peak demand period which occurred during the commissioning period.
